Athletics: Mark McGwire has reached base safely in each of his 33 games this season and 47 straight games dating to last season. His streak surpasses Rickey Henderson's team record of 46 set in 1980-81.

Braves: The team's 19-6 record in May was its best since moving to Atlanta in 1966. . . . Fred McGriff has four four-hit games this season -- two of them against the Reds.

Giants: Second baseman Robbie Thompson was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 30, with a neck injury.

Mariners: Seattle played its first Saturday afternoon home game since 1977 to accommodate the first day of baseball telecasts on the Fox network.

Mets: Catcher Brent Mayne is 0-for-11 in throwing out base stealers. . . . Pete Harnisch had not walked his previous 59 batters before the three walks in the first inning.

Pirates: Shortstop Jay Bell hit .216 in May. It was an improvement over last May, when he hit .175.

Red Sox: Mo Vaughn has eight career homers against the Mariners, seven at the Kingdome.
