Switzerland celebrates jazz

The 30th Montreux Jazz Festival will be held July 5-20 in Switzerland by the shores of Lake Geneva in the resort town of Montreux. Not only jazz but also blues, reggae, soul, rap and pop will be performed by, among others, Quincy Jones, Stephan Eicher, David Sanborn, Phil Collins, George Benson, Elvis Costello and Herbie Hancock. Concerts will be held in the Stravinski Auditorium and Miles Davis Hall and on open-air stages. Two tour operators specializing in musical holidays offer festival packages. Ciao! Travel, (800) 942-2426, has three- and six-night packages that include hotel, concert tickets and water sports on Lake Geneva. Land-only packages range from $599 to $2,079 a person, double occupancy; with air fare, it's $2,049 to $3,099. Interworld-Pacific Tours, (800) 801-2188, has packages with air fare, hotel for six nights and concert tickets. Rates depend on the departure city: $1,955 from New York, for example, $2,249 from Los Angeles.
