Purdy unbeaten in Santa Maria Cup


ANNAPOLIS -- Melissa Purdy, mainsail trimmer on America3, the women's team that competed in the past America's Cup, completed an undefeated sweep through the round robin of the Santa Maria Cup women's match racing championships with four victories yesterday.

Purdy of Tiburon, Calif., won five races on Thursday and will be the top seed in the semifinals to be sailed on the Severn River today.

Betsy Alison, the four-time Rolex yachtswoman of the year from Newport, R.I., lost only to Purdy in the round robin and enters the semifinals as second seed.

Klaartje Zuiderbaan of the Netherlands won six of nine races, including a defeat of Dawn Riley to clinch the third seed.

Riley, a veteran of two Whitbread Round The World races and two America's Cups, won the fourth spot in the semifinals.

The semifinals are a best two-of-three format.

Area racers Sandy Grosvenor of Annapolis, Lauren Abramson of Baltimore and Melinda Berge of Fulton, finished sixth, seventh and ninth in the 10-boat field.

Results through yesterday: 1. Purdy (9-0) defeated Alison, Becky Wilson, Zuiderbaan, Abramson, Grosvenor, Felicity Clarke, Berge, Marie Boserup Klok; 2. Alison (8-1) defeated Wilson, Zuiderbaan, Abramson, Grosvenor, Clarke, Berge, Klok, Riley; 3. Zuiderbaan (6-2) defeated Clarke, Grosvenor, Riley, Wilson, Klok, Abramson; 4. Riley (6-2) defeated Clarke, Grosvenor, Wilson, Kolk, Abramson, Berge; 5. Clarke (4-5) defeated Grosvenor, Kolk, Abramson, Berge; 6. Grosvenor (3-6) defeated Klok, Abramson, Berge; 7. Abramson (3-6) defeated Klok, Berge, Wilson; 8. Wilson (3-6) defeated Clarke, Grosvenor, Klok; 9. Berge (3-6) defeated Wilson, Clarke, Zuiderbaan; 10. Klok (0-10).
