Hits and misses

May 21, 1996|By Brad Snyder

On the field: Roberto Alomar and Cal Ripken turned two nice double plays last night. On Chili Davis' first-inning grounder, Alomar dived and flipped it to Ripken. On Garret Anderson's fourth-inning grounder, Alomar scooped up the ball and shoveled it to Ripken in one motion.

In the dugout: After sparking controversy earlier in the day by saying he was toying with the idea of moving Cal Ripken to third temporarily, Davey Johnson substituted Manny Alexander for Ripken at short in the seventh inning and the Orioles ahead 10-1.

In the clubhouse: "We haven't played well, we haven't pitched well. We just haven't executed." -- Manager Marcel Lachemann after the Angels' seventh loss in eight games.
