Shandwick USA/Baltimore, the city branch of the international public relations firm, won four national public relations awards last night, while capturing 12 first-place awards and "best of show" in a statewide competition.
Shandwick, which received more awards than any other firm in the Public Relations Society of America's annual "Best in Maryland" ceremony at the Belvedere, won best of show for its national launch of the U.S. Catholic Conference's toll-free movie review service.
The promotional campaign has generated more than 100,000 calls to the review service since its September 1995 debut and drawn widespread publicity.
Shandwick also was the only Maryland firm to win national Creativity in Public Relations Awards, presented last night in New York and sponsored by Inside PR and Reputation Management magazines.
The agency won the national awards for communications programs for St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Del., St. Joseph Hospital in Lancaster, Pa., a corporate brochure for Hughes Network Systems, a Germantown telecommunications firm and a direct mail program for Wheelabrator Technologies, a New Hampshire-based company.
In the Maryland PRSA competition, Richardson, Myers &
Donofrio, the Baltimore advertising and public relations firm, received 10 awards.
Other multiple award winners included Cornerstone, which received six; Trahan, Burden & Charles, five; Catholic Relief Services, three; and McCormick and Co., three.
Trahan's Sandra Hillman, who founded the public relations division at the agency in 1984, received the "Lifetime Achievement Award." Hillman, who was director of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Tourism under then-Mayor William Donald Schaefer, helped define the city's downtown renaissance.
She now specializes in shaping the images of cities in America, Europe, and the Caribbean by helping them develop marketing plans focusing on tourism and special events to rejuvenate their economies.
