A man was was fatally injured yesterday morning when his car crossed the center lines of U.S. 1 in Elkridge and struck a tractor-trailer head-on, Howard County police said.

The victim, whose name was not released because relatives had not been notified, was pronounced dead at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore shortly after his arrival.

He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Clessie Worley, 49, of the 4200 block of Jerusalem Road in Marianna, Fla., and his passenger were not injured, police said.

Police said the victim was driving a Dodge Neon north on U.S. 1 at the Route 100 intersection about 8: 20 a.m., when his car crossed the double yellow lines into the path of the southbound tractor-trailer, said Cpl. Fred von Briesen, a traffic investigator.

The victim was in cardiac arrest and had severe wounds to his chest, abdomen and legs when rescuers got him out of his car about 30 minutes later, said Lt. Michael Baker, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.

The rescuers revived the man, and a state police helicopter flew him to the hospital, Lieutenant Baker said.
