A state correctional officer made a surprising discovery as he prepared to escort a prisoner to court yesterday -- a gun in the coat lining of a suspect who had been searched repeatedly by police.

Bruce Sean Womack, 22, of the 2300 block of Druid Hill Drive, apparently had the gun for 49 hours in the Northwestern police district lockup, though police searched him three times, said Agent Robert W. Weinhold Jr., a police spokesman.

Mr. Womack was arrested about 6 a.m. Saturday on charges of selling suspected cocaine near his home. The discovery of the gun came about 7 a.m. yesterday, when correctional officers Keith Kelly and C. Babb, who work at the Baltimore City Detention Center, were preparing to take Mr. Womack from the Northwestern District to court for bail reviews.

Officer Kelly found a loaded, palm-sized, .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun in the man's coat.
