Athletics: Mark McGwire's homer, estimated at 462 feet, landed midway up the left-field roof. Since Tiger Stadium got its present configuration in 1938, only Harmon Killebrew in 1962, Frank Howard in 1968 and Cecil Fielder in 1990 have homered over the roof.

Blue Jays: Frank Viola was 0-1 with a 6.28 ERA in three games with Cincinnati last year.

Brewers: The team has asked several highly paid players to defer part of their salaries until after the season. Officials deny the move has anything to do with funding a new stadium. Team president Bud Selig insisted the Brewers had no trouble meeting their payroll.

Mariners: Their 43 homers in April are a record, surpassing the 38 hit by the Chicago White Sox in 1984.

Yankees: Looking for a second baseman, club officials asked about Los Angeles' Delino DeShields but were told the Dodgers weren't interested in trading him.
