A 9-month-old Westminster girl was killed yesterday when the car in which she was a passenger was hit from behind and forced into the oncoming lane where it was struck again, state police said.

Julia Christine Bowersox, of the 400 block of Dotsie Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. She was in a child safety seat, police said.

Police said the mother, Barbara O. Bowersox, 33, was driving a 1990 Buick north on Route 97 about 11: 35 a.m. and had stopped to make a left turn onto Pleasant Valley Road, when her car was struck from behind by a 1993 Ford Mustang, driven by Brent Henry Black, 22, of the 1500 block of Miller Road in Westminster.

The impact drove the Buick into the southbound lane of Route 97, where it was struck on the passenger side by a 1991 Chevrolet driven by David F. Redding, 48, of Littlestown, Pa.

Police said Mrs. Bowersox and Mr. Redding were flown by MedEvac helicopters to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where they were in serious condition last night.

Three occupants of the Chevrolet were treated for minor injuries at Carroll County General Hospital and released.

Mr. Black, the driver of the Ford Mustang, was not injured.

The county prosecutor's office was reviewing the accident, police said.
