Patuxent Valley team, Troop 613 win Envirothon

Students from Patuxent Valley Middle School and Boy Scout Troop 613 won the Howard County Envirothon last week, earning a chance to represent the county in the state competition next month.

Thirteen teams of students competed to answer questions testing their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and greenways.

The Patuxent Valley team of Erin Podolny, Janna Kaye, Andrea Alexander, Emily Grason, Zack Richardson, Mike Schaffer and Greg Shivley won the middle school division.

At the high school level, the winning team was Chris Lay, Russell Brammer and Valerie Brammer of Howard High School, John Anderson and Justin Earp of Atholton High School, and Steven Barth of Mount St. Joseph's High School. They are all members of Troop 613, based in Columbia's Oakland Mills village.

The students will compete in the state Envirothon May 17 and 18.
