Man missing after falling from sailboat Rough waters force divers to stop search

April 28, 1996

A 61-year-old Eastern Shore man was missing last night after he fell overboard from a sailboat in the mouth of the Severn River, Department of Natural Resources police said.

Divers searched for Wolfgang E. Siebeck, 61, of the 7600 block of Quaker Neck Road in Bozman until the water, driven by stiff breezes, became too rough, said John Surrick, a department spokesman. Natural Resources police began dragging the river until dark. They will resume at 7: 30 this morning, Mr. Surrick said.

Mr. Siebeck, who was not wearing a life jacket, and Hans W. Gerhand, 67, of the 600 block Candigan Road in Bethesda were leaving Annapolis about 1: 45 p.m. in a 38-foot Bristol sailboat, Mr. Surrick said. Both men were rigging the sails as the boat reached the spider buoy that marks the mouth of the river when Mr. Siebeck fell from the boat.

Why he fell is under investigation, Mr. Surrick said.
