Krygier says Lemieux should be suspended

April 26, 1996|By Sandra McKee

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Mario Lemieux did a very uncharacteristic thing during Wednesday night's NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal game against the Washington Capitals.

He used a two-handed slash across the back of Todd Krygier's left leg to fell the Capitals' left wing like a Christmas tree, then jumped on his back and began beating him up.

The incident occurred in the second period, after Lemieux and Krygier had slammed into each other near the boards at USAir Arena.

"I think Mario should be suspended," Krygier said. "I don't even know if I can play the next game [tonight]."

Lemieux was given a five-minute major penalty for fighting, two minutes for slashing, two minutes for instigating and a game misconduct.

Lemieux had no comment, and the NHL said it would not take any further action.
