March of Dimes walk is Sunday

April 26, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

An estimated 4,000 walkers -- 20 percent more than last year -- are expected to take part in Baltimore's 26th annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica on Sunday.

This year's walk will begin and end at Towson State University, a change in course from the traditional Memorial Stadium start and finish line. Check-in and registration time is 8 a.m. at Towson State's Parking Lot No. 9, near Union Hall off Osler Drive. The 12-mile walk starts at 9 a.m.

The walk benefits the March of Dimes fight against birth defects and infant mortality.

The No. 8 MTA bus will run free for walkers all day from downtown to the York Road entrance to Towson State and back. A March of Dimes shuttle bus will take walkers from the York Road bus stop to the Osler Drive start site.

The course will run from parking lot No. 9 west on Towsontown Boulevard to Charles Street, south on Charles to Cold Spring Lane, east on Cold Spring to Hillen Road, and north on Hillen to Morgan State University -- the half-way point, where refreshments and first aid will be available.

It continues on Perring Parkway north to Belvedere Avenue, west on Belvedere to Loch Raven Boulevard, north to Goucher Boulevard, northwest on Goucher to Hillen again, west on Hillen to Burke Avenue, west to Towsontown Boulevard and back to Towson State and parking lot No. 9.

For more information, call the March of Dimes at 752-7990.

Another 2,000 walkers will take part in four other March of Dimes events, also starting at 9 a.m. They are at the Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, Forest Hill Recreation Center in Harford County and Centennial Park in Columbia.
