Bikel's 'Tradition'

THEATER

April 25, 1996|By J. Wynn Rousuck

When Theodore Bikel sings "Tradition" in "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Lyric Opera House next week, he might as well he singing about himself. The actor, folk singer and activist has played the role of Tevye, the milkman, more than 1,000 times. That's a lot of sunrises and sunsets, and beginning Tuesday, he'll add eight more as he re-creates his beloved role in this 1964 musical based on Sholom Aleichem's stories about a Russian Jewish villager with five marriageable daughters.

Show times at the Lyric are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 7: 30 p.m. Sunday, with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $19-$50. Call (410) 494-2712.
