A carjacker surprised a Columbia man in an apartment parking lot yesterday morning, forced him to the ground and drove off in his car, Howard County police said.

The victim, John Brown, was not injured, police said. About 3: 30 a.m. yesterday, Mr. Brown left an apartment in the 5200 block of Cedar Lane in Columbia's Harper's Choice village to get something out of his car, police said.

Someone approached Mr. Brown from behind, put a hard object against his head and told him to lie on the ground, he told police. Thinking the object was a gun, Mr. Brown complied, though no weapon was shown. The carjacker took car keys from Mr. Brown's pocket and drove off in his car -- a blue 1989 Toyota Cressida with Maryland tags BWF-593, police said.
