A Howard County police officer fatally shot a man last night who police said twice aimed a shotgun at officers trying to serve an arrest warrant at a home in Dayton in connection with an earlier shooting incident.

The name of the 36-year-old boarder -- whom police said had fired a shot at another resident of the house in the 5400 block of Ten Oaks Road -- was not released pending notification of relatives.

Police said tactical officers were trying to serve the arrest warrant at the home near the Montgomery County border about 8: 45 p.m. when the man came out of his house and raised a shotgun at the officers.

A statement released by the Howard County Police Department last night said that the man lowered the gun, then "raised it again to his shoulder and aimed at two officers. A member of the tactical section shot the suspect once in the chest."

The man was declared dead at the scene.
