Red Sox: In Tom Gordon's previous appearance at Jacobs Field, he allowed 10 runs in one-plus innings in Cleveland's 17-7 victory over Kansas City in the season finale last year. . . . The Red Sox were also 3-13 in 1927 and '32.

Royals: Dry weather and strong winds forced Kansas City to cancel its fireworks feature, prompting boos from the crowd of 15,321.

Twins: Minnesota came into the game with 10 stolen bases and got five, one off the team record.

Yankees: Second baseman Pat Kelly had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, and doctors said they found a minimal amount of scar tissue. . . . Suzyn Waldman became the first woman to broadcast a Yankees game on a team telecast, working with Bobby Murcer and Rick Cerone for WPIX-TV. Last season she became the first woman to broadcast a major-league game on network television.
