Fusion Systems named company of the year

The founder of a Gaithersburg-based information technology company has been named entrepreneur of the year, and a Rockville-based supplier to the semiconductor industry has been named company of the year by the Suburban Maryland High Technology Council, a technology industry trade group.

Entrepreneur award-winner Robert Grimes is founder and president of Cyntergy, which provides information tracking services to the retail, food and hospitality industries.

He was cited for his persistence in keeping the company alive through a tough start-up period. The company saw annual revenue growth of 150 percent over six years as its work force grew from 50 to more than 250.

Fusion Systems, which supplies equipment to the semiconductor industry, was named the 1996 high-technology company of the year. Fusion, which employs 560 in Maryland and had revenues of $109.6 million in 1995, was cited for its revenue and employment growth.

Jack Shaw, chief executive officer of Hughes Network Systems in Germantown, was named executive of the year.
