Rangers update: Texas has started almost as quickly as the Orioles, and in a similar fashion -- good hitting (the Rangers ranked first in the AL before yesterday's games), good pitching (second in the AL, behind the Orioles), and solid defense. Catcher Ivan Rodriguez has moved into the No. 2 spot in the order and is hitting .327, and right fielder Juan Gonzalez (.389, 13 RBIs) and first baseman Will Clark (.313, 9 RBIs) have rebounded from disappointing '95 seasons. The Rangers have had good starting pitching but are a little thin in middle relief.

Key stats: Pavlik has pitched well against the Orioles, allowing 10 hits and five runs in 14 1/3 innings. . . . Haynes has been the loser in two of the Orioles' three defeats. . . . Right-hander Mike Henneman and left-hander Ed Vosberg are sharing the closer's role for Texas; each has three saves.
