A 70-year-old Virginia man was struck by a car and killed Wednesday night while walking across U.S. 1 in North Laurel, Howard County police said.

Harry Atlee Smith of the 700 block of Flower Drive in McGaheysville was pronounced dead at Greater Laurel-Beltsville Hospital shortly after the accident, police said.

The driver of the car, James Kelly Russell of Columbia, was interviewed by police and released. No charges had been filed early yesterday, but police were continuing the investigation.

The incident happened at 9: 22 p.m. Wednesday, police said, when Mr. Smith stepped into U.S. 1, just south of North Laurel Road, where there are no traffic lights or pedestrian traffic controls.

Mr. Russell's northbound vehicle struck him, causing severe injuries. When emergency medics arrived minutes later, Mr. Smith was in cardiac arrest, rescue officials said.

He was taken to the hospital in Prince George's County, where he died from his injuries.
