Utility flagman hit by car on Route 27

A utility company flagman was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday after he was struck by a station wagon on Route 27 near Taylorsville, state police said.

Michael J. Gilbert, 27, of the 4600 block of Poole Road in Sykesville was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Gilbert was directing traffic in a construction zone for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. about 11: 20 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by Charles S. Hare Jr., 49, of the 100 block of Hook Road in Westminster.

Mr. Gilbert was wearing a reflective vest, police said.

Mr. Hare, who was not injured, was issued citations for following too closely and for failing to pay full attention, police said.


Mount Airy: Firefighters from Mount Airy assisted Montgomery County at 9: 22 a.m. Monday, responding to an electrical fire in a building on Main Street in Damascus. Units were out 10 minutes.
