Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld,83, a social activist known for his involvement in the formation of Israel and the civil rights movement, died Monday in Beachwood, Ohio, from a brain tumor. Rabbi Lelyveld, who served on the board of the Cleveland chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in the 1960s, was one of the nation's first rabbis to join the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign for civil rights. He participated in key marches and was beaten with tire irons by segregationists.
