Police arrested three men Friday on charges that they beat and robbed a Laurel man then tried to steal his car, police said.

Ivan Jerme Brown, 26, of the 1900 block of Arwell Court in Severn, Lester Darrell Edwards, Jr., 25, of the 3500 block of Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel, and Carlyle Emmanuel Brooks, Jr., 25, of Thorndale Ave. in Baltimore were charged with robbery, attempted carjacking and battery.

Police searched for, but did not find, a fourth suspect.

Eric Todd Foster, 29, of the 3500 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road in Laurel told police he was waiting at a traffic signal at the intersection of Charter Oaks Boulevard and Annapolis Road shortly before 10 p.m. when his car accidentally backed into a gold Volkswagen.

When Mr. Foster got out of his car to speak to the driver, the passengers got out of the Volkswagen and began punching and grabbing him, police said.

They wrestled Mr. Foster's jacket, which contained his wallet, off him. One of the assailants got into Mr. Foster's car and tried to drive off, but Mr. Foster was able to reach through the driver's side window and pull the keys out of the ignition, police said.

An officer arrived shortly afterward and saw the Volkswagen driving away. The officer broadcast a description of the vehicle over police radio, and another officer spotted the car on Annapolis Road and stopped it, police said.

The men ran off, but officers caught two of them at the intersection of Annapolis Road and Walker Drive. A police dog tracked down a third suspect in the woods along Annapolis Road.

Mr. Brooks was treated at North Arundel Hospital for a dog bite on his right hand and released, police said.
