Agencies combine into a bureau of buildings, grounds

April 14, 1996

The county is combining its building services and land and management agencies into the Bureau of Buildings and Grounds, effective tomorrow.

Mike Whitson will supervise the bureau, which will be part of the Department of Recreation and Parks.

During a recent program and priority review, county officials identified several opportunities to streamline services. Merging the two bureaus and combining the staff of 46 employees will mean more effective use of resources, said Richard Soisson, director of recreation and parks.

"This will be a better utilization of manpower," said Mr. Soisson. "It also offers flexibility. We will be able to do more in-house instead of contracting out."

The bureau will be responsible for maintenance of county buildings and management of county owned properties.

Stream Clean Up Day planned for Longwell Run

The Bureau of Water Resource Management is sponsoring a Stream Clean Up Day Saturday on Longwell Run as part of the Longwell Run Watershed Management Project.

The stream originates near Manchester Avenue, flows northwest past the county office building past the Route 140 overpass at Route 27, then northeast to Bennett Cerf Park, where it empties into the West Branch of the Patapsco River.

The stream has suffered bank erosion, bed scouring and loss of wildlife habitat.

The cleanup is being performed in honor of Earth Day. All are invited to participate.

To volunteer call Laura Moran at 857-2150.
