Tour of houses

A tour of houses in Dulaney and Long Green Valleys, part of the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1. The excursion will start from the Hampton National Historic Site, 535 Hampton Lane, and will include tours of Long Quarter Farm, Boordy Vineyards and Prospect Hill.

Also, a tour of houses in Prince George's County, in time to celebrate the county's tricentennial, will be held May 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will start from the Belair house, 12207 Tulip Grove Drive in Bowie and will include tours of His Lordship's Kindness, Bowling Heights and Dukeshire, which, along with the other nine houses on the tour, provide a look at three centuries' worth of architecture.

Cost of tours in their entirety is $20 each or $5 for an individual house. Cost of lunch is $6.50 on the Dulaney and Long Green Valley tour and $7 on the Prince George's County tour.

Frederick County events

The Tourism Council of Frederick County announces publication of the 1996 Frederick County Spring-Fall Calendar of Events. The calendar provides a detailed listing of area happenings planned through October, including information on the county's history, as well as seasonal opportunities, entertainment and lodging.

Garrett calendar

The May-October 1996 Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake Calendar of Events is now available. It includes a wide array of activities for the whole family: festivals, outdoor activities, cultural and community events. Fallingwater, the famous house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is now open for tours every day except Monday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fallingwater is between the villages of Mill Run and Ohiopyle on Pennsylvania 381. Cost of admission is $8 a person on weekdays, $12 on weekends. Weekday discounts are offered for school groups, and children's tours are also available. Members of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy get in free. Reservations should be made two weeks in advance by calling (412) 329-8501.

Old Town Alexandria

Retrace the steps of George Washington, Robert E. Lee and other famous citizens of Alexandria, Va., during a walking tour of Old Town. Tours will be conducted daily through Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Through Sept. 28, visitors can also participate in ghost tours by lantern light at 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

All tours depart from the Ramsay House Visitors Center, 221 King St. Tickets for daytime tours are $3 for adults and $2 for ages 7 to 17. Ghost tours are $4 for adults and $3 for students. Call (703) 548-0100.

Emergency care

The Center for Continuing Education at Essex Community College will offer a course this spring on wilderness emergency medical care. The 43-hour course is designed to teach prevention, recognition and treatment of common wilderness medical problems, and stabilization of a severely ill or injured patient for evacuation. Students must have a current American Heart Association CPR Basic Life Support Card. For information, call (410) 780-6633.

Susquehanna camping

Susquehanna State Park's Campground will be open for camping April 26. The campground has been renovated with 12 new sites, which have camping pads and fire rings and which offer more privacy and camping area. Fees this year will be $12. For more information, call (410) 557-7994 or (410) 836-6735.

Biking preparation

The Cycle Across Maryland Corp., a nonprofit organization, will hold a program to help you prepare for the biking season. The event will be held at 8 a.m. April 27 at Liberty High School, off state Route 32 on Bartholow Road in Eldersburg. Workshops will cover nutrition, camping-gear options, bike photography, changing tires, basic and advanced bike repair, and cycle training with children. Cost is $15. Win a cruise

Notre Dame Preparatory School is offering a Bon Voyage Raffle for four first-class cruise vacations -- to the Mediterranean, Alaska, Disney World and the Bahamas, and Mexico. All trips include round-trip airfare, meals and entertainment. The second prize includes a rental car and admission to Disney World.
