Angels: Assigned OF Eddie Christian to Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Athletics: Doug Johns has a 1.20 ERA and has held opponents to a .160 batting average in two starts, both victories.

Brewers: 1B Dave Nilsson went on the 15-day DL retroactive to April 4 with a hairline fracture in his left foot. IF Mark Loretta was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

Mariners: Randy Johnson had been 0-5 with a 7.02 ERA at Tiger Stadium coming into yesterday's game. He struck out at least one batter in every inning he pitched. . . . Johnson's 4-6 career record against Detroit is his second worst against any opponent. His only other losing records are against Baltimore (3-5) and New York (6-7).

Red Sox: Kevin Mitchell is day-to-day after straining his left hamstring while making a catch in the seventh inning. . . . Mike Greenwell went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and is 8-for-15 with five RBIs in the last three games as a leadoff hitter. He batted first just once in his previous nine seasons. . . . The game was delayed 90 minutes as the grounds crew prepared the field after Wednesday's game with the Twins was snowed out.

Royals: Kevin Appier becomes a free agent at the end of the year and his agent, Dennis Gilbert, says $6.5 million a year sounds like a good number to keep Appier. The pitching ace has said he wants to stay in Kansas City and likely would take less money than he could get on the open market to do it.

Twins: Brad Radke is the first Minnesota starter to open a season with three consecutive wins since Bill Krueger won four in 1992.

Yankees: Signed P Paul Gibson to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus.
