Howard County police charged a North Laurel man yesterday in a hit-and-run accident on U.S. 1 Tuesday that left a pedestrian critically injured.

Robert Delatos, 35, of the 10000 block of Washington Blvd., is free on $500 bond. He is accused of failing to remain at the scene of a traffic accident causing bodily harm, a District Court commissioner said.

The victim, Sanford R. Walters Jr. of the 8400 block of Woodward St. in Savage, remained in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday afternoon, a spokeswoman there said.

Mr. Walters was walking on U.S. 1, just north of North Laurel Road, when he was struck about 10: 15 p.m. Tuesday. Police and rescue workers found him near the intersection about 10 minutes later, suffering from head, face, neck and leg injuries, police said.

Wednesday, police said they were uncertain whether the injuries were caused by a vehicle, and they were unable to interview Mr. Walters because he was unconscious.

Later, someone who had heard the collision gave traffic investigators a description of a truck seen leaving the accident, police said.

Officers searched the area, found a similar truck -- Mr. Delatos' Nissan -- at the nearby Valencia Motel early yesterday and arrested him after questioning, police said.
