Deliveryman foils attempted robbery

April 11, 1996

A pizza deliveryman foiled a would-be robber Tuesday by claiming that he had spotted a police car, authorities said yesterday.

Khurram Shafiq, 27, who works for a Pizza Boli's store in Odenton, told police that he was making a delivery in the 8600 block of Pioneer Drive in Severn about 8: 30 p.m. No one answered the door at the residence, but a man approached from behind, gestured with his hand under his jersey and threatened to shoot the deliveryman if he did not turn over money, police said.

Mr. Shafiq pointed toward the road and said, "Look, there is a police car," and ran when the robber looked away, police said. Mr. Shafiq was not injured and no money was taken, police said.
