Students plant tree in memory of officers

April 11, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Students from Joppa View Elementary School near White Marsh planted a pear tree yesterday at the Maryland State Police headquarters in Pikesville in memory of troopers Edward A. Plank and Joseph T. Lanzi, who were killed in the line of duty last year.

Twenty-three third-graders dug the hole and planted the tree in front of the state police memorial at the headquarters complex on Reisterstown Road. The planting was part of the school's Love Officers Very Easily mentoring program.

Trooper Plank was shot fatally during an Oct. 17 traffic stop on the Eastern Shore, and Trooper Lanzi was killed in an Oct. 28 car accident in Cecil County. Their widows, Lori Plank and Lisa Lanzi, took part in the ceremony.
