Exam shows Benitez has strained muscle

April 09, 1996|By Buster Olney

Orioles reliever Armando Benitez, bothered by a sore elbow, was diagnosed with a strained flexor muscle in an examination yesterday, and his status will be evaluated day-to-day. "There are no plans to put him on the disabled list," said club spokesman Bill Stetka.

Benitez's elbow began bothering him in the final days of spring training, and Orioles manager Davey Johnson held him out of action in the Orioles' first four games. Benitez finally did pitch an inning against Minnesota on Saturday, striking out all three hitters he faced. However, his elbow hurt Sunday, and he was not available to pitch.
