2 arrested in beating of roommate

April 04, 1996

Police arrested two Glen Burnie men Tuesday on charges that they beat and robbed their roommate. A third Glen Burnie man was arrested on unrelated drug charges, county police said.

James Michael Welsh, 36, and Richard David Hudson, 40, both of the first block of Greenway were charged with assault and robbery. Anthony Aulman Saunders, 34, of no fixed address was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with possession of marijuana.

Police said William S. Hepburn, 37, of the Greenway address, went to the District Court Commissioner's office shortly before 1: 30 a.m. to report the beating.

Police said Mr. Hepburn went to his roommates to deliver his share of the rent, $125, shortly after 1 a.m. The men beat him and took the money, police said. The commissioner called police after Mr. Hepburn said the men were still in the house, police said.

Officers went to the house and arrested the two men. Police said they interviewed a third man while investigating the robbery and discovered that he was wanted for walking away from a work-release job March 18 and not returning to the county detention center, where he had been serving a six-month term for theft.

A small amount of suspected marijuana was found in his wallet, police said.
