Man brings in watch, runs out with jewelry

April 03, 1996

A man who posed as a customer who needed his watch repaired stole more than $600 worth of gold jewelry from a Laurel store Monday, county police said.

Police said the man entered Thompson Jewelers, in the 3500 block of Fort Meade Road, shortly before 11 a.m. and asked to have his wristwatch checked.

Store owner Ralph Wilcox told police he was looking at the watch when the man asked to see a 14 karat gold men's necklace and bracelet. Mr. Wilcox let the man try on the merchandise and he ran from the store with the jewelry, police said.

Police did not have a detailed description of the suspect.
