The Columbia Festival of Arts, scheduled July 14-23, has announced its 1996 program.

Featured in the festival, held at nine venues in and around Columbia, are: legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck; Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman; blues singer Joe Williams; veteran actor William Windom; and vocal quartet the Foremen.

Performance highlights also include the dance music of Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, alternative rock band Love Riot and award-winning guitarist Al Petteway.

Celebrated visual artists include Jacob Kainen and Hou Rong, who will discuss their work, as will Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver.

Tickets will range from $10 to $25 for adults. Tickets for children ,, and students are half price, and seniors receive a 10 percent discount. For information, call (410) 715-3044.

Musical manager

Kevin Ladd has been appointed general manager of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Ladd, who brings more than 20 years of orchestra experience to the BSO, will be responsible for orchestra personnel, artistic administration, concert production and Meyerhoff Hall administration. Currently the personnel manager, Mr. Ladd will continue in that position as well as assuming the duties of general manager.

Same sponsor, new name

First Union Bank of Maryland, formerly First Fidelity Bank, will continue to be the title sponsor of the Pier Six Concert Pavilion. The summer concert season will be named the First Union Harbor Music Festival. The complete entertainment schedule for the music festival will be announced in May.

Photos from Senegal

Goucher College senior Elissa Jacobson will display photographs of Senegal in the exhibition "Beyond Language: A Cultural Exchange" in the Meyerhoff Arts Center through April 20. An artist's reception will be held April 2, from 5: 30 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. in the arts center.

Illustrating rural and urban life, Ms. Jacobson's photographs portray children, adults, interiors and landscapes from various Senegalese villages and cities she visited last summer. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Call (410) 337-6116 for information.

Sisters' subjects

Sittin' With the Sisters Inc., a new nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating artists and writers whose work addresses issues confronting urban women, will sponsor a reception with Baltimore playwright/ director Kevin "Downtown" Brown celebrating his new comedy-drama, "Sittin' With the Sisters: Back Together Again." Funds raised from the April 4 event, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Walters Art Gallery, will help support the staging of the work in late April. The play will be the second progression in Mr. Brown's power of sisterhood trilogy of plays. NewsChannel 2's Sandra Pinckney will be the emcee. Wine designs

Designs for the Maryland Wine Festival poster and promotional material competition are due by 3 p.m. April 2, in the Carroll County Arts Council office at Winchester Exchange on Main Street in Westminster. The winning artist will receive a $1,000 cash prize. For rules, call (410) 848-7272.

Summer of art

Registration is being accepted for the University of Maryland's Art & Learning Center's summer arts camps and summer leadership camps.

Five two-week sessions are being offered beginning June 17. The camps will run from 8: 30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with extended care available from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Arts camps are open to ages 8 through 12. Leadership camps, which are geared to middle- and high-school ages, will focus on community service and self-development.

Arts camp topics will include "Science is Everywhere," "Fine Arts Fun," and "Kids + Clay = Play." A creativity zone that includes painting, drawing, sculpture, creative writing, singing,

storytelling and pottery also will be offered.

Auditions

Today is the last day of auditions for Harford Community College's Phoenix Festival Theater's summer productions of "Big River," "You Can't Take it With You" and "The Wizard Of Oz." The auditions will be held in the college's Chesapeake Center from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A children's audition, for ages 7 to 15, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals auditioning for musicals should bring sheet music and be prepared to be taught and perform a dance routine. Auditioners for "You Can't Take it With You" should prepare a one- to three- minute comic monologue. Call Terrie Raullie at (410) 836-4369 for more information.

Vagabond Players is holding auditions April 8-9 for its production fTC of Wendy Wasserstein's play "The Sisters Rosensweig." Needed are four women, aged 17 to 60, and four men, aged 20 to 62. The play runs June 20-July 21. For information, call (410) 563-9135 or (410) 655-4826.
