Second man is charged in holdup, shooting at Giant

A second suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder last night in connection with an attempted robbery in which a cashier at a crowded Giant supermarket was shot Thursday night at the Rotunda shopping center.

Anthony Chris Drake, 36, of the 1800 block of Lorman Ave. in West Baltimore also was charged with armed commercial robbery and a handgun violation.

Police alleged that Mr. Drake was one of three men who staged the holdup at 7: 45 p.m. Thursday, but fled after one of them shot cashier Mary Haines three times. She was shot as she backed away from the cash register, witnesses told police.

Police officers initially said they suspected that Lawrence Haskins III, 34, who was charged with the same crimes on Friday, had been the gunman. But police spokeswoman Ragina Cooper said that investigators now believe Mr. Drake fired the shots.

Ms. Haines, who was struck in the shoulder, arm and neck, was discharged yesterday from Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police said the third man is being sought.
