Builders' market index jumps sharply in March

The National Association of Home Builders' Housing Market Index jumped 10 points in March, spurred by improving weather and rising interest rates, which brought many undecided buyers into the market.

The index is now 60 on a scale of zero to 100, with zero the worst. It is based on a monthly survey of homebuilders. Each month, the survey asks builders to rate present sales of single-family detached homes and to give their sales expectations for the next six months. A year ago, the index was 39.

"As is often the case when interest rates rise slightly after falling for several months, many 'fence-sitters' jumped off the fence in late February and early March and made the decision to buy, and this naturally boosts builders' confidence," said NAHB President Randy Smith, a homebuilder from Walnut Creek, Calif.
