Bernice L. Avis, 75, active in Lutheran church

Bernice L. Avis, who was active for more than four decades in Second English Lutheran Church, died of a brain tumor at St. Agnes Hospital on March 23. She was 75.

The Catonsville resident had been president of the Women of the Church, a member of the Sarah Circle and Circle of Special Concerns, a Sunday school teacher and a former superintendent of the intermediate department.

She was an adviser to the Lutheran League and founded the Briarclift Club for Seniors at the church. She also was a summer counselor at Hood College Summer Bible School and was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Avis began working in the late 1930s 's classified advertising department. She later was a social worker at Lutheran Hospital, a medical secretary and a unit secretary at St. Agnes Hospital from 1959 to 1969.

She was born Bernice Frederick in Baltimore and was a 1938 graduate of Western High School. She and William D. Corell married in 1941; he died in 1959. In 1964, she married John W. Avis, a Baltimore businessman, who survives her.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Second English Lutheran Church, U.S. 40 and Briarclift Road.

Other survivors include two sons, Kenneth C. Corell of Catonsville and George W. Corell of Greenville, S.C., and two grandsons.
