A 25-year-old Baltimore man was killed Wednesday when the Pontiac Firebird he was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer whose driver failed to yield the right of way at an intersection in Elkridge, Howard County police said.

John Steven Schrump, of the 300 block of Millington Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened at 6: 42 p.m. at U.S. 1 and Meadowridge Road, police said.

The tractor-trailer driver, Kevin Claude Norton, 39, of Walford, Iowa, was charged with failure to yield the right of way on a left-hand turn and negligent driving, police said. He was not injured.

Police said the collision occurred when the tractor-trailer, southbound on U.S. 1, attempted to make a left turn on a green signal in the path of Mr. Schrump's northbound Pontiac.

Mr. Schrump tried to swerve to the right to avoid being hit. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Police said the cause of the collision was the tractor-trailer driver's failure to yield the right of way.

Four injured when truck collides with rescue vehicle

Three Howard County firefighters and a dump truck driver received minor injuries yesterday when the dump truck pulled into the path of the emergency vehicle in Elkridge, authorities said.

The firefighters from the Elkridge fire station were responding to a fire alarm on Business Parkway when their rescue squad vehicle hit the rear of the dump truck at 10: 16 a.m. on U.S. 1 near Old Washington Road, said Cpl. Frederick von Briesen of the Howard County Police Department's traffic enforcement section.

Firefighters Ivan Alexander, 41, and Joseph Slavotinek, 42, were taken to Howard County General Hospital, where they were treated and released. Daniel Casey, 24, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle and had to be extricated, was expected to remain overnight at the county hospital, the corporal said.

The dump truck driver, Merrell Maupin, 54, of Alexandria, Va., was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where he was treated and released. He was charged with failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

During an inspection of the dump truck, police also cited the driver for equipment violations, including faulty brakes.

Police said Mr. Maupin was driving south on U.S. 1 when he heard a siren behind him and pulled over to let a fire engine go by. After that truck passed, Mr. Maupin pulled back onto the road and into the path of a second emergency vehicle, police said.

Other emergency vehicles responded to the alarm on Business Parkway, but there was no fire, a spokesman for Howard's fire services said.
