A 30-year-old Annapolis man is being held by police in connection with a two-alarm fire yesterday that displaced 33 residents and caused more than $100,000 damage to the Spa Cove Apartments in the 1100 block of Primrose Court.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, told investigators that he piled cushions on a couch in his apartment and set it on fire with paper, said Capt. Leonard A. Clark, an Annapolis Fire Department spokesman. The man has been taken to the Anne Arundel Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation, he said.

The blaze, which started at 12: 09 a.m. in a third-story, two-bedroom apartment, took about two hours to bring under control, Captain Clark said. Two residents were taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Eleven units in the building were damaged, and the fire caused either smoke or water damage to all three floors and burned a portion of the roof.
