Deale woman killed in automobile collision

A Deale woman was killed Monday when the car in which she was riding ran a red light at Bay Front and Solomons Island roads and struck another car, county police said.

Elizabeth Lenhart Merkle, 68, of the 6000 block of Melbourne Ave. was killed instantly. Her son, William Wayne Merkle, 43, of the same address, who was driving, was not injured.

The driver of the other car, Donald Raymond Winchell, 48, of the 1700 black of Quantico Court in Edgewater, suffered hip and internal injuries, officials said. His passenger, Austin Cook, 36, of the 1600 block of Cleveland Road in Annapolis, suffered broken ribs and minor injuries. Both men were flown to Prince George's Trauma Center, where they were listed in good condition.

Mr. Merkle told police he was talking to his mother while driving his 1992 Cadillac Seville east on Bay Front Road in Tracys Landing. As he approached Route 2, he said he did not see the red light and drove into the driver's side of Mr. Winchell's 1986 Ford pickup truck, police said.
