A burglar armed with a screwdriver broke into a west Columbia home while residents slept yesterday morning, assaulted a couple and stole cash, Howard County police said.

John Raymond May, 53, was treated at Howard County General Hospital for cuts and abrasions to his eye yesterday and released, police said.

Mr. May's wife, Brenda Lee May, 51, and daughter, Stacey Anne May, 22, were not injured, police said.

The family's ordeal began about 5 a.m. yesterday while they were asleep in their home in the 6200 block of Cardinal Lane in Columbia's Hickory Ridge Village.

A burglar broke a first-floor window of the home, entered, walked to the couple's bedroom, surprised them in their sleep and attacked Mr. May with a screwdriver, police said.

The burglar demanded cash from the couple, forced them into the garage, locked them there and fled with an undetermined amount of money, police said.

The burglar was described as a thin white male, 20 to 25, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall. He had sandy blond hair and wore blue jeans, a navy baseball-style jacket and white sneakers, police said.
