County police arrested a 26-year-old man yesterday on charges of trying to rob a 7-Eleven in Glen Burnie.

Steven Barry Johnson, of no fixed address, was charged with attempted robbery and assault and battery.

Police said a man walked into the 7-Eleven in the 7700 block of Quarterfield Road shortly after 2 a.m., made several small purchases and waited for customers to leave.

When everyone else had left, the man walked behind the counter, put his forearm to the clerk's throat, and said: "Don't say anything. This is a robbery," according to police.

Clerk Gary McClary pushed him away and said, "You better not," police said. The man ran out of the store empty-handed.

Police found a man fitting the suspect's description shortly afterward on Crain Highway near Mayo Road, police said. The clerk identified the man, and police arrested him.
