Woman recants report about bogus officer

March 26, 1996|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An Edgewood woman has recanted her report that a man, masquerading as a police officer, tried to search and handcuff her after stopping her car March 16, authorities said yesterday.

Melissa Brown, 23, recanted her statement after detectives from the Harford County sheriff's office noted numerous inconsistencies in the story, but she will not be charged with making a false report, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said.

Ms. Brown had told deputies she was pulled over at 12: 45 a.m., near Route 543 and U.S. 40, by a man who had a flashing red light in his car. She said that the man wore a brown uniform and carried a badge, and gave a description that was used to produce a sketch that was shown on television.
