Vehicle hits police car on Crain Highway

March 25, 1996

A Baltimore man was charged with driving while intoxicated after the car he was driving hit an Anne Arundel County police car and sheared off a telephone pole, police said.

Eric O. Barckow, 32, was treated for head and face injuries at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

Police said Mr. Barckow's car, a Ford Tempo, was speeding in the northbound lanes of Crain Highway near Fifth Avenue in Glen Burnie with its lights off about 2: 30 a.m. when it hit a curb.

The car veered out of control, hit the police car and struck a car on a used-car lot before it hit the utility pole, dragging live wires to the ground, police said.

The police car, driven by Officer Douglas R. Ashby, had turned onto Crain Highway from Fifth Avenue when it was hit.
