Wrestler of the year

Mike Babiak, John Carroll, Sr. (27-4): Ranked No. 3 at 189 in the state; defeated Tom Staab in their only meeting; lost twice to No. 1 Greg Plitt.

Wrestler of the year

Kevin Carter, Aberdeen, Sr. (22-2): Two-time county champion was regional champion. He reversed only regular-season loss in state 1A-2A semifinals, before losing in final, 3-0.

Coach of the year

Dick Slutzky, Aberdeen: The No. 11 Eagles (9-2) won a 12th straight county title and were region runners-up with a squad of freshmen (five starters) and sophomores. This had to be one of Slutzky's best efforts in 24 years as the school's head coach, for the team lost 27 wrestlers.

The first team

James Axel, Aberdeen, Soph. (25-4): First in county and region at pounds, he split four matches in state tournament.

Rick Desper, North Harford, Jr. (10-2): January transfer from Joppatowne was 4-0 in the regular season; won county 119 title as fourth seed; fifth in region.

Mike Reilly, C.M. Wright, Jr. (22-11): One of county's three No. 2 seeds to win a title, the 125-pound titlist was fourth in the region; unplaced in the state at 130.

Glen Folck, North Harford, Jr. (23-12): At 130, first in county, fourth in region, unplaced in state.

Jason Lentz, C.M. Wright, Sr. (25-8): First in county, fifth in region at 135.

Joe Ercolano, Fallston, Sr. (29-6): County 140 titlist was second in region, sixth in state.

Tim Smallwood, Bel Air, Jr. (24-5): County 145 titlist failed to place in region.

Chris Schneck, C.M. Wright, Jr. (15-8): Third at 145 in county and fourth in region, he made team with one of county's two seconds at state meet.

Sam Collins, North Harford, Sr. (22-9): County 152 champion was third in region, unplaced in state.

Leroy Simms, Harford Tech, Sr. (26-7): The county 160 winner as a second seed was third in region, unplaced in state.

Romaine Russell, Bel Air, Sr. (20-7): Won county 171 crown as second seed; third in region, unplaced in state.

Tom Staab, North Harford, Sr. (27-3): Successful county defender at 189, he won 26 straight matches before losing to eventual state champion Greg Forbes in regional final. Unplaced in state.

Steve Voelker, Fallston, Jr. (22-8): Unplaced in regional after winning county heavyweight title.
