How do I flair to a tired breakfast area? At present, It has ## yellow-painted walls and white vinyl flooring. I'm willing to buy , cozy, country-style look.

Before you head for the furniture store, give some thought to the walls and floor. Your choice of color and pattern for those surfaces will prove just as important as whatever pieces of furniture you may eventually decide to buy.

Start by getting rid of that vinyl flooring. You could replace it with ceramic tile, as was done in the room shown in the photo. But if you're lucky enough to discover a good wooden floor under the vinyl, a better alternative would be to stain or paint the wood in a color that contrasts with either your present or future furniture.

This color-contrast principle is clear in the photograph. Dark floor tiles were combined with scrubbed pine furniture and creamy white walls. The country styling owes a lot to the coordinated floral coverings. A mini-print was applied at chair-rail height, and a larger but similar pattern was used above it. The patterns on the walls are in turn coordinated with the window fabrics.
