Capitals tonight

March 23, 1996

Opponent: Hartford Whalers

Site: USAir Arena, Landover

Time: 7: 30

TV/Radio: HTS/WTEM (570 AM)

Outlook: Led by LWs Brendan Shanahan and Geoff Sanderson, the Whalers are 3-2-1 in their past six games. Washington comes in off a 3-3 tie with Tampa Bay on Thursday and is in a tight race for one of the last three Eastern Conference playoff spots. RW Peter Bondra, the Caps' leading scorer with 40 goals and 24 assists, appears to be breaking out of a nine-game slump with three goals in his past five games. Already without LW Keith Jones (groin), D Brendan Witt (broken wrist) and D Ken Klee (groin), the Caps have lost LW Craig Berube for up to six weeks with a torn medial collateral ligament. Hartford RW Kevin Dineen (broken wrist) is out.
