A Baltimore man was sentenced to 60 years in prison yesterday after pleading guilty to raping a 32-year-old woman at gunpoint in 1994 while he was infected with the AIDS virus.

Brian Avery Beard, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree rape, a second-degree sex offense and the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony. Baltimore Circuit Judge Clifton J. Gordy Jr. sentenced him to 20 years in prison on each count, the first five of which are to be served without parole.

Beard was arrested in a Manassas, Va., laundromat in October 1994 after a four-day manhunt in which police provided his picture to the media and warned the public that he was suspected of raping women in the area of 25th Street and Greenmount Avenue in Baltimore.

In yesterday's case, Beard pleaded guilty to raping the woman after accosting her with a handgun near a bus stop in the 800 block of 25th St. He also had been charged with abducting and raping two other women including a pregnant 16-year-old but the charges were dismissed when DNA tests proved inconclusive.

Beard's mother, Ida Dail, confirmed that Beard has AIDS. A female acquaintance of Beard told police that Beard was aware he had the deadly disease and intended to spread it, proclaiming: "I am taking as many with me as I can."
