A 30-year-old man pleaded guilty yesterday in Howard Circuit Court to sexually assaulting his friend's 6-year-old girl in a Long Reach apartment last June.

Robert Michael Andrews, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a third-degree sexual assault before Judge Donna Hill Staton. His sentencing is scheduled for May 28.

The maximum sentence for the offense is 10 years in prison, but Assistant State's Attorney Cindy Johnson said she will ask the judge to impose a sentence of three years in prison.

Ms. Johnson said Andrews and his mother were staying at his friend's Long Reach apartment while looking for a place to live when the girl went to the home to visit her father and grandmother.

On the night of June 24, the girl's grandmother entered the room where Andrews was staying and found him in the bed with the girl. The girl told her family that Andrews had kissed her and fondled her.
