Pasadena meets Calif. cousins on the Internet Council's newsletter also has Texas readers

It seems as if everybody is going on-line even the Greater Pasadena Council.

The council has entered the information superhighway by posting its monthly newsletter on the World Wide Web for all to browse, and Internet surfers from as far away as Texas and California are scrolling it.

"We've been getting a lot of favorable responses from people all over," said newsletter editor John Kodis, who also loads the publication onto the net.

"It's a great idea," said Carlton Treff Jr. of Pasadena, who saw the on-line newsletter two weeks ago.

"If more people in the community knew it was there, they could be able to keep up-to-date with everything current in the newsletter and the community," Mr. Treff said.

Mr. Kodis, who has been editing the newsletter for the past year, said he got the idea for on-line publication last year. At first, curiosity led him to ask his Internet server to create a Web page for the newsletter.

But Mr. Kodis became more interested when he learned that the cost of posting the publication was included in his $200 annual fee for the on-line account, while it costs the council $1,000 a year to print and mail the newsletter.

"By putting a copy on the web, it provides the potential for worldwide access to anybody interested in it," Mr. Kodis said.

"People who don't get the newsletter would still have access to the information."

Mr. Kodis said he posted the first newsletter in January. Since then, he has received e-mail responses from people as far away as Pasadena, Calif., he said.

"They're usually cruising the web and looking for information on their Pasadena," he said.

"They'll stumble across the newsletter and say, 'I noticed your newsletter. I'm in the other Pasadena in California. Just thought I'd say hi.' "

Mr. Kodis said he also received e-mail from a woman in Texas, who had formerly lived in Pasadena. "It's thorough," Mr. Treff said. "He's got back issues from previous months."

It takes Mr. Kodis less than two hours to post the newsletter on the Internet.

But the potential of reaching out to people who don't attend council meetings or who are not members far outweighs the time spent on the publication, Mr. Kodis said.

"We want to see the Greater Pasadena Council grow and be able to help people in the community," Mr. Kodis said. "We just saw this as being another resource for letting people share their thoughts and ideas about Pasadena."
