Hearings on crabbing limits start tonight at Annapolis High

March 19, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Members of the public living around the Chesapeake Bay will get a chance starting tonight to comment on crabbing restrictions the state wants to put into effect June 17.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources intends to ban commercial and recreational crabbing one day a week, although shorefront property owners and casual recreational crabbers using hand lines and dip nets would be exempted. State officials plan to consider public opinion in deciding which day of the week to require crabbers to take off.

Other 1996 regulations include closing the crabbing season one month earlier, on Nov. 30. For a list of regulations, call (410) 974-3988 or (410) 974-3558.

This is the schedule of meetings, each starting at 7 p.m.:

* Tonight -- Annapolis Senior High School, 2700 Riva Road.

* Thursday -- Essex Community College, 7201 Rossville Blvd.

* Friday -- State Office Building, Route 245, Leonardtown.

* Monday -- Wicomico County Library, Salisbury.

* March 27 -- Easton National Guard Armory, U.S. 50.

* March 28 -- Crisfield High School, 210 N. Somerset Ave.
